HEALTH MODELS- ARE THEY ACHIEVABLE?
HEALTH MODELS- ARE THEY ACHIEVABLE?
Written by MANUEL CHIKWAYA
The World Health
Organization (WHO) defines health as "a state of complete physical,
mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or
infirmity."
Health is a multifaceted concept that encompasses a wide
range of factors. Some of the key concepts of health include:
1) Physical Health: Physical health refers to the
overall condition of the body, including factors such as fitness, nutrition,
and disease prevention. Physical health is critical for overall well-being of
humans. It includes aspects such as
physical activity, a balanced diet, good hygiene, regular check-ups, and
avoiding risky behaviors such as smoking or substance abuse. Our physical
well-being also encompasses our strength, flexibility, cardiovascular,
digestive, and other systems. This demonstrates how ready our body is each day
to navigate the outside world.
2) Mental Health: Mental health refers to the
psychological well-being of an individual. This concept emphasizes the
importance of mental and emotional well-being in overall health. It recognizes
that mental health is just as important as physical health, and that mental health
issues should be treated with the same seriousness as physical health issues. It includes emotional, cognitive, and
behavioral aspects, as well as the ability to cope with stress and adversity.
Mental health encompasses factors such as self-esteem, resilience, social
support, and access to mental health care.
3) Social Health: Social health refers to the
quality of an individual's relationships and the degree to which they feel
connected to others. This concept recognizes that social, economic, and
environmental factors play a crucial role in determining health outcomes. It
emphasizes the importance of addressing social determinants of health, such as
poverty, education, and housing, to improve health outcomes. It also includes aspects such as social
support, communication skills, and the ability to form meaningful
relationships. Social health also involves a sense of belonging, acceptance,
and inclusion within one's community
4) Environmental Health: Environmental health
refers to the impact of the physical environment on an individual's health. A
clean environment is essential for human health and well-being and at the same
time, the local environment can also be a source of stressors. Clean air, a
stable climate, sufficient water, sanitation and hygiene, chemical safety,
radiation protection, healthy and safe workplaces, sound agricultural
practices, health-supportive cities and built environments, and a maintained
natural environment are all necessary for good health.
5) Spiritual Health: Spiritual health refers to an
individual's sense of purpose and meaning in life. It includes aspects such as
belief systems, values, and the ability to find meaning and purpose in life
events. Spiritual health creates a balance between physical, psychological and
social aspects of human life. Spiritual wellness can improve your quality of
life, lessen anxiety, stress, and depression, as well as increase feelings of
inner calm and hope. It can also help you deal with the trauma of diagnosis and
treatment.
Achievability
The concepts of health are achievable to
varying degrees, depending on individual circumstances, resources, and social
and environmental factors. While achieving perfect health may not be possible
for everyone, making positive changes and improvements in one's health is
achievable and beneficial.
Here are some examples of how the concepts
of health can be achieved:
A)
Physical Health: Engaging in regular physical activity,
eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, avoiding harmful substances like
tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption, and seeking appropriate medical care
when necessary.
B)
Mental Health: Practicing stress-reducing
activities such as meditation, seeking therapy or counseling when needed,
practicing good sleep hygiene, developing coping skills, and staying socially
connected with others.
C)
Social Health: Building and maintaining positive
relationships, engaging in social activities, seeking support from others, and
volunteering in one's community.
D)
Environmental Health: Making environmentally
conscious decisions such as reducing waste and pollution, using sustainable and
eco-friendly products, and advocating for policies that promote a healthy environment.
E)
Spiritual Health: Engaging in practices that
promote inner peace and reflection, such as meditation, yoga, or prayer, and
identifying and living according to one's values and beliefs. One can do the
following to improve their spiritual health: 1)One needs to create spiritual
habits like reading religious scriptures, walking, listening to music, as this
gives one an opportunity for self -reflection. 2)One need to live a life with a
sense of purpose and one need to connect to that purpose to avoid frustrations
and a sense of hopelessness in life. 3)One need to adopt a sense of gratitude. 4)One
need to practice giving back by donating money, skills and time to one’s
community. When you achieve spiritual
wellness, you have made peace with your life.
In conclusion, it is important to note that
achieving good health requires effort, consistency, and a willingness to make
positive changes. Additionally, some factors that influence health, such as
genetics or exposure to environmental toxins, may be outside of an individual's
control. However, by taking steps to promote health and well-being in all
aspects of life, individuals can increase their overall quality of life and
reduce the risk of injury, disease and illness.
